Antimicrobial resistant infections pose a major threat to global public health. In this episode of bioMérieux’s IppocraTech podcast, hear Dr. Daniela Bianco discuss strategies for combatting antimicrobial resistance from the agenda of G20-2021.
According to Dr. Bianco, an aggressive plan for combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) played a vital role in the political agenda of G20-2021. There is a strong international commitment to revisiting AMR objectives in hopes of developing a stronger overall healthcare system. Strategies include further adopting the One Health approach and pursuing education for properly addressing hospital acquired infections (HAIs).
Tools such as in vitro diagnostics also play a role in stewardship strategy. As Dr. Bianco notes, diagnostics provide insight into which bacteria are causing an infection, and whether the bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. This valuable information offers advantages for stewardship, allowing clinicians to begin tailoring treatment sooner, limiting the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Bianco also stresses the importance of fostering and reallocating budget to microbiology departments, because they have a fundamental role in tackling infectious disease.
Additionally, Dr. Bianco provides insight into the forum of the Meridiano Sanita, coming up on November 16th, 2021. One subject of discussion will be the essential need for a multi-sector approach to combatting AMR. As we learned from the pandemic, there are no borders when it comes to infectious disease, making it critical that we address AMR from a global perspective.
